Abstract

Zamia chigua, a large arborescent cycad of the Pacific coast of Colombia, produces two very large spermatozoids per pollen tube. After fixation and embedment in glutaraldehyde-OsO4, the diameter of the spermatozoid is approximately 400 μm. This is about 100 μm larger than the greatest dimension reported for any other cycad. Unlike other cycads in which spermatogenesis is seasonal, spermatogenesis in Z. chigua is continuous throughout the year.
