Organogenesis, Aestivation, and Anthesis in the Flower of Lilium tigrinum

Abstract

In Lilium tigrinum Ker the five floral whorls arise acropetally. Within each whorl members arise consecutively. The spiral direction in which floral organs arise is usually reversed in alternate whorls. Phylogenetic implications of this pattern are considered. Neither sepal opening pattern, nor petal aestivation pattern, nor anther dehiscence pattern follows the organogenesis of those parts. Two aestivation patterns appear much more frequently than all others. The possible factors responsible for those patterns are discussed.
