Apical Meristems of Ephedra foliata

Abstract

1. During development of the root apex of Ephedra foliata Boiss. the rows of cortical cells in the root proper are continuous with the rows in the periphery of the root cap. The columella of the cap does not contribute in any way to the peripheral region from which it can be distinguished cytohistologically. In the columella cell divisions occur in rib-meristem fashion, while in the peripheral region division figures are oblique to the long axis of the root, a factor which is mainly responsible for the oblique position of these cells. 2. In general the root apex of E. foliata is similar to that of other gymnosperms. 3. The shoot apex of E. foliata shows a tunicacorpus organization similar to that in other species of Ephedra and in other members of the Gnetales. 4. The adult and embryonic shoot and root apices show similar structure.
