In 1974 Lee Benham investigated the hypothesis of a symbiotic transmission of human capital associated with marriage and its effect on the husbands earnings within the context of the United States marriage market. In the interest of seeing if Benhams results apply in a more traditional marriage market the data used in this study are from a sample household survey for Tehran Iran gathered in 1976. In Iran there are significant culturally induced barriers to entry and exit in the marriage market. Results obtained with the Tehran data can be compared with Benhams results for the U.S. The rate of return on education to husbands without the wives education in the equation was 9.0% for the U.S. and 9.7% for Iran. The coefficient on wifes education was 4.1% for the U.S. and 3.7% for Iran with a reduction in the coefficient of husbands school to 7.0% in the U.S. and to 7.7% in Iran. The total rate of return was 11.1% for the U.S. and 11.4% for Iran. The increase in the standard error of the husbands coefficient was 0.66 for the U.S. and 0.68 for Iran. The results obtained with data on married males in Tehran are consistent with U.S. results. The rates of return to schooling for the husband which include the effect of wifes education on husbands earnings were calculated and no evidence was found that the joint productivity of human-capital interaction within marriage is a function of the endowment of human capital. It appears that above 6 years of schooling the rates of return from the wife are about 4.0% while the rates of return due to the husband rise across schooling levels. There is some evidence that it is costly for males in the lower end of the schooling distribution to marry females who possess a level of schooling 1 level lower than the husbands.
