Arecibo Observation of B2 0902+343 in the 21 Centimeter Line at Redshift 3.4

Abstract

New Arecibo observations of the high-redshift radio galaxy B2 0902+343 confirm the detection of absorption in the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen at z abs =3.397 (Uson, Bagri, & Cornwell 1991a) against the radio continuum source. The Arecibo observations do not confirm the presence of H I emission from a Zel'dovich pancake at z≃3.4 in the direction 09 h 03 m .8+33°52'; the emission feature was expected to be observed with greater than 10 σ significance
