We have tested the process of using the maximum entropy method (MEM) and VRI photometry to reconstruct arbitrary spot distributions on a W UMa system similar to VW Cephei. The tests used a series of 86 test models each of which consisted of one circular spot located at some position on the surface of a modeled W UMa system. Positions of spots not located in the polar region were recovered within ±3°-8° in longitude and about ±20° in latitude. Recovery of the total bolometric flux deficit of spots was accurate within 23%
