Microphotometer measures of the total absorptions of lines of O II within the wing of Hγ, and of CaH within the wing of HЄ, show departures from the normal absorptions predicted from the multiplet intensities of these lines. The departures increase with the wing absorption, but the effect is more pronounced for O II than for CaH. Eddington's theory of absorption lines leads to a theoretical evaluation of the effect. The remaining discrepancies between this theory and actual observation are unexplained.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 2 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
