The Peculiar Galaxy NGC 6052

Abstract

Photographs of NGC 6052 (Arp 209) indicate a rather unusual structure. The main body of the galaxy shows regions of strong emission and the eastern side shows extended, irregular appendages. (Plate I is reproduced from the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies.) From the optical image, one might guess that rotation could be about a roughly east-west axis, with material flowing outward to the north and south on the eastern side. Several spectrograms of the galaxy have been obtained using the Kitt Peak National Observatory 84-inch reflector with the Cassegrain spectrograph and the Carnegie image intensifier. Measurements of these plates indicate that simple rotation would not give rise to the observed velocities and that an outflow of material may be partially responsible for the unusual appearance. The dispersion used for these plates was 130 Â/mm. Kodak Spectroscopic Ila-O plates were used, and the photocathode was an S -20. The two best spectrograms have been measured independently by each of the writers on different Grant profile comparators at the Kitt Peak and David Dunlap Observatories. One of these plates is reproduced in Plate II.
