The Structure of the Small Magellanic Cloud.

Authors: Hugh M. Johnson;

The Structure of the Small Magellanic Cloud.

Abstract

In the infrared passband λλ 7000-7600 (103a-U emulsion plus RG8 filter) the 8-inch Schmidt shows the Small Cloud as a quite elliptical patch with some internal structure (Plate I). It is natural to ask whether the Small Cloud is, in fact, a complex system with one component having the essential characteristics of an elliptical galaxy. The infrared plate would record the radiation of the red giants in the elliptical component, whereas the ionized hydrogen and hot-star emissions of another component would be relatively weak. The Plate I dimensions of the Cloud are about 3?7 X 2?5, centered at 0h52m, -73 ?3 (1950 throughout). The major axis is in PA = 55°. The size of this E-like component is about the same as that of elliptical galaxies in the Local Group, as shown in Table I. Here angular size has been reduced to the Sandage scale1 mostly from the data of Allen where "diameters are intended to represent well-exposed photographs but are not extreme."2
