Two recent articles in the College Art Journal1 have directed strong criticism upon the field of art history in American colleges and universities today. Mr. Wright has objected to the kind of textbooks available for use in art history courses, and has made specific recommendations for a different type of book on Far Eastern Art by more than fifty recognized authorities. He believes too much attention has been given to the writings of Aristotle, Vitruvius, Ruskin, Tolstoi, Ozenfant, Barnes, Ogden, and Clive Bell. Essentially he wants the history of art to be written so as to reveal all the works of art of a given period and place in relation to the then current modes of thought and experience.
