Abstract

The treatment of urinary tract infections is simplified if they are classified in four groups: uncomplicated acute, complicated acute, asymptomatic and chronic bacteriuria. This makes it easier to decide whether active treatment is indicated, when to start treatment, how long to give it, and which drugs to use. The primary rationale for vigorous treatment is the prevention of morbidity associated with the infection rather than prevention of chronic uremia.
