Tonsillectomies account for 25 per cent of all surgery done in the average general hospital, but there is no uniform technic for the operation. The author advocates a method of dissection and hemostasis which involves five essential elements: (1) endotracheal anesthesia, (2) perfect illumination, (3) an unimpaired view of the operating field, (4) meticulous dissection, and (5) hemostasis by tying.
