Spore-to-Spore Cultivation of A New Wrinkled-Reticulate-Spored Badhamia

Abstract

A new species of Badhamia is described based on collections from the scattered remains of alfalfa bales near Kansas State University. This species is distinguished from all other myxomycete taxa by its unique spore ornamentation. About half the spore surface is wrinkled-reticulate and the remainder is almost smooth with a ridge line marking the future site of germination. Scanning electron microscopy was used to highlight structural details of spore ornamentation. This species is characterized by gyroseconfluent plasmodiocarps that often possess a massive pseudocolumella and a typically badhamioid capillitium. Subcultures were obtained from spore to spore cultivation on sterilized cow dung and dung extract agar. The effeet of substratum on taxonomic characters was evaluated for fructifications de? veloped on natural substrata and agar under controlled laboratory conditions. Developmental events are described during the 6 to 12 d period needed to complete the life cycle.
