Azo dyes have been prepared by coupling phenols with diazotized C- amino-1,2,4-triazole and p-aminophenyl-1,2,4-triazoles. Spectroscopic proofs of structure establish preferential para-coupling. The dyes exist in the azo form without evidence for quinone hydrazone tautomers. Spectroscopic evidence and chelation not involving the phenolic hydroxyl group suggest trans-configuration.
