The separation from extracts of Acacia acuminata, by chromatographic procedures, of β-carotene and a colourless fluorescent oil of similar adsorption properties is described. On the basis of its absorption spectrum and other properties the fluorescent oil is considered to be closely related to and possibly identical with the colourless carotenoid, phytofluene.
