Treatment of a Class II malocclusion with deep overbite

Authors: Albin Byron, Hammond;

Treatment of a Class II malocclusion with deep overbite

Abstract

Facially, the patient appeared symmetrical, with normal lip competence and full display of incisors on smile (Fig 1). She had a convex profile with a retruded chin. She had a Class II Division 1 malocclusion with 5.0 mm overjet and 100% palatally impinging overbite (Figs 2 and 3). There was mild-to-moderate crowding in the maxillary arch and minimal crowding in the mandibular arch. Her dental midlines were coincident with the facial midline. A Bolton analysis showed normal anterior proportional relationships. She had not yet begun her pubertal growth spurt, according to a growth history. The panoramic radiograph showed a normally developing dentition with 3 remaining primary second molars, developing second molars, no third molars, and no dental restorations (Fig 4). Skeletally, she had a retrognathic mandible and an ANB angle of 6° (Figs 5 and 6, Table). She had a skeletal deep overbite tendency as indicated by the low mandibular plane angle. She had severely retroclined maxillary incisors with a maxillary incisor to SN angle of 92°. The mandibular incisors were retruded relative to the NB line and retroclined with a mandibular incisor to mandibular plane angle of 86°. TREATMENT OBJECTIVES
