The synthesized sunscreen compounds: C-heptylcalix[4]resorcinarene octabenzoate and octasinnamate

Abstract

The synthesis of C-heptylcalix[4]resorcinarene octabenzoate and octacinnamate had been conducted. The activity test as sunscreen compound has also been carried out. The first step of synthesis of C-heptylcalix[4]resorcinarene was the reaction between resorcinol with octanal using HCl catalyst in ethanol at 78 °C for 24 hours to yield C-heptylcalix[4]resorcinarene (CHCR, 96%). The second step was the esterification of CHCR with benzoyl chloride in pyridine at 60 °C for 8 hours, yielded C-heptylcalix[4]resorcinarene octabenzoate (CHCROB, 40%). Synthesis of C-heptylcalix[4]resorcinarene octacinnamate (CHCROC) was also carried out using similar method with cinnamoyl chloride to yield CHCROC, 65%. The structure of products was elucidated by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and LC-MS spectrometers. Furthermore, the determination of the value of SPF of synthesized compounds was carried using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and photostability test employing a UV lamp (intensity of 0.27 mW/cm2) with variation of time of 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. The result of activity test of the synthesized compounds as sunscreen showed that SPF value of CHCR, CHCROB, and CHCROC were 8.32; 4.17 and 190 at 50 ppm, respectively. Therefore, based on the result of SPF, it is indicated that CHCROC could be used as sunscreen compounds especially for UV-B region.
