1,2-Dihaloethanes were catalytically reduced by electrochemically generated C60n− (n=2 or 3) anions in 0.1 M tetrabutlammonium hexafluorophosphate in benzonitrile under cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode (RDE) voltammetry conditions at platinum electrodes. The second-order catalytic rate constants, determined by the RDE voltammetry under pseudo-first-order conditions against the 1,2-dihaloethanes, largely increase in the order: 1,2-dichloroethane<1,2-dibromoethane<1,2-diiodoethane. Alkanes, alkenes and monohalogenated alkanes were products of the electrocatalyses.
