Optimization of the performance of segmented-telescopic penetrators

Abstract

The performance of segmented-telescopic penetrators is investigated in this numerical study. It is shown that the penetration depth of single segmented-telescopic penetrators impacting a semi-infinite target is exceptional. However, the penetration depth of multiple segment trains can be marginal; the degradation in performance is a result of segment-to-segment interference effects. Techniques for improving the performance of multiple segment trains are suggested.
