Solar coronal mass ejections are prominent example of interpenetrating particle streams with different properties: densities, speeds, temperature and composition. Such counterstreaming plasmas are quickly unstable leading to the excitation of the electrostatic and electromagnetic instabilities. Here it is shown that plasma instabilities of Weibel‐type could offer plausible explanations for the origin of the two‐dimensional magnetic field fluctuations observed in interplanetary space.
