In this Brief Communication, the two-dimensional laminar flow of an incompressible viscous jet through a channel with a sudden expansion is analyzed in the case of a large expansion ratio. It is shown that, when the jet Reynolds number is sufficiently large, the momentum exchange between the incoming jet and the recirculating fluid determines the structure and the scales of the resulting flow, as well as the critical conditions for appearance of asymmetric solutions.
