The use of a circular reciprocating microtome knife is described along with a mechanism for sharpening the knife. A reduction of distortion in serial sections for embryological reconstructions is claimed and the physics involved noted. Related subjects are discussed and special emphasis is placed on the mechanics of sectioning with such a knife. The procedure of generating and finishing the knife facets is briefly outlined and compared with those used in sharpening straight microtome knives.
