The statistical distribution of fluctuations in the gain of a 1P21 photo-multiplier tube has been investigated and standard deviations of 36 percent to 48 percent have been found. The distribution in photo-multiplier output pulse heights obtained with Po alphas incident on a ZnS screen has also been investigated and standard deviations of 27 percent to 80 percent found. The importance of the contribution from the fluctuations in gain is shown to be small in this case.
