Laser-excited Raman spectra are reported for polymethacrylic acid as a solid, an aqueous gel, and a strongly alkaline aqueous gel. The spectrum of the neutral gel is identical with that of the solid, although alkalization produces some changes. The spectra are analyzed in terms of changes in chain configuration. Some of the Raman lines of the aqueous gel are highly polarized. The polarizations are used to make some frequency assignments.
