This paper shows that in general, plane stress waves in solids or fluids exhibit two phase velocities. One of these is associated with the stress profile of the wave and the other with the mass-velocity profile. These velocities are distinct except for isentropic simple waves, steady flow, or discontinuous fronts, As a result, the determination of time-dependent constitutive relations from shock-wave experiments requires more measurements than has heretofore been recognized.
