Abstract

The month-long fast is one of the major sacraments, or acts of worship in Islam. It is a time of joy and blessings, of special meals and family warmth, and a wonderful time for children. Fasting is holistic, in that it involves body, mind, and soul in an inseparable way. It is an individual act but undertaken simultaneously by Muslims worldwide, fostering a spirit of solidarity among worshippers, particularly between the rich and poor.
