This chapter considers how from a constitutional point of view the state should regard the institutional presence of religion in formal political structures. It starts by examining whether recent discussion has revealed any principles arguing for a special place for religious representation in the legislature, turns to consider whether the actual performance of the bishops in recent years discloses special or practical reasons for their remaining in the House of Lords, and then looks at how they might be removed.
