In this paper, the term ‘system of medicine’ servesas a conceptual framework for a range of treatmentmodalities that share a similar or related theoreticalorientation. For example both traditional Chinesemedicine and Western biomedicine can be seen assystems in this context. Some commentators on thepractice of Chinese medicine have criticized the ten-dency to label traditional Chinese medicine as a‘system’.
