Nephropathia epidemica (NE) is the European form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by a hantavirus infection serotype Puumala. Small rodents serve as the virus reservoir. Characteristic for the clinical picture, though not always present, are a sudden onset, fever, headache and/or abdominal or lumbar pain, reduced renal function, proteinuria or hematuria and thrombocytopenia. Rapid and spontaneous recovery is the rule [1]. The occurrence of neurological symptoms during hantavirus infections is common but paid little attention [2].
