This is not a comprehensive treatise on management. Rather, it is a series of observations based on a wide and sometimes successful experience as both manager and managed. Nor is it solely about engineers in management. First I shall make some generalised observations about management, taking every opportunity to display my prejudices, and then I shall come to the particular virtues and vices displayed by engineers who become managers, or who aspire to do so.
