People in the developed world are remarkably unsceptical when our leaders propose projects as grandiose as putting a man on the moon or sequencing the human genome. But can we believe in a project that will halve global infant and maternal mortality by 2015? During the winter of 2006, I visited India and Ethiopia as a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellow and got a feel for the things that make early life so precarious in the developing world.
