Keratin is the principal protein consitutent of hair, nails and stratum corneum. It can be defined as a group of filamentous and amorphous proteins produced by epithelial cells which are insoluble in the usual protein solvents due to the presence of numerous disulfide bonds between peptide chains (1). Electron microscopic, x-ray diffraction, and biochemical techniques have proved useful in elucidating various properties of keratin (2).
