Abstract

IN plants the effect of physical and chemical mutagens has been found to depend on the frequency of spontaneous mutation1,2, but no such information is available from animal material. I have therefore investigated the relationship between spontaneous and X-ray-induced somatic mutation in the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. This relationship was found to be positive and significant when the genotype was manipulated by artificial selection for speed of development.
