HAZELTINE1 claims to have demonstrated that DDE residues are metabolized by developing embryos of brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis). This conflicts with experimental work2 on Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix), in which incubation did not seem to affect total residue levels in eggs, except for some conversion of p, p′-DDT to p, p′-DDE.
