WHEN many polymers are pyrolysed, they change directly into a form of carbon which retains the original morphology without passing through a plastic phase. This type of carbon has a glass-like appearance and is referred to as a glassy carbon. It is hard and brittle, unlike the soft graphitic forms of carbon, and does not revert to these forms at high temperatures.
