DIVING animals have been reported to respond with a drastic reduction in heart rate when their head is submerged; this is known as “diving bradycardia”. The phenomenon has been reported in dozens of species including some that do not ordinarily dive1. The bradycardia is extreme; for example, the heart rate of the alligator drops from 41 to 3 (ref. 2). We here suggest that a significant portion of the reduction reflects the animal's psychological state.
