TYPE E botulism has been implicated as the cause of mortality of waterbirds on Lake Michigan and the toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum type E has been found in carcasses of dead fish taken from the lake1. DDT and its metabolic residues are also present in both the Lake Michigan waterbirds and the species of fish in which the type E botulinal toxin was found2–4. The objectives of this study were to test the possibility that there may be an interaction between the two materials, both of which are neurotoxins5,6.
