PREVIOUS methods of preparing sperm whale teeth for age determination have generally involved the preparation of ground and polished thin sections1–3, or half teeth2,4,5, which have been examined under a dissecting microscope2–7, a surface projector2, polarized light2, or after treatment with histological stains, for example carbol fuchsin or haematoxylin2–4,6.
