A possible mechanism to account for the intense light flashes observed in the supernova 3C 273 is presented. The mechanism is based on the theory that collective formation of a cluster of more massive stars with similar evolutionary time-scales may result in numerous Type II supernova explosions in a limited period of time. It is suggested this may account for the large energy radiated by strong radio sources. (C.H.)
