The following article is the substance of the Trueman Wood Lecture delivered by Prof. E. B. Chain before the Royal Society of Arts on June 19, with the Right Hon. Lord Nathan, chairman of Council of the Society, in the chair. The entire lecture is published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Arts of October 1963.
