GRISEOFULVIN, originally isolated from Penicillium griseofulvum by Oxford1 et al. in 1939, is produced commercially by the fermentation of three Penicillium species: griseofulvum Dierck X, janczewskii and patalum. Brian2 et al. first described its antifungal properties in 1946, but another twelve years elapsed before Gentles3 demonstrated its efficacy against Microsporum canis and Trichophyton mentagrophytes when administered orally to infected guinea pigs.
