IT is now well established1–4 that mucoproteins, particularly those containing neuraminic acids, play a major part in the natural defences of the human body. With the object of determining what part is played by such mucoproteins in human cancer we have assessed the amount and distribution of mucoproteins containing neuraminic acid by determination of the neuraminic acid content of tissues obtained in surgical operations for cancer of the stomach, colon and breast, and compared these with those of tissues obtained during removal of ulcers of the stomach and duodenum.
