IN a series of publications Groen, Pelser, Frenkel, Kamminga and Willebrands1–6 have reported on the successful treatment of Addison's disease by extract of liquorice, glycyrrhizinic acid or glycyrrhetinic acid. It was shown that either the crude liquorice extract or its active component produced an effect on electrolyte metabolism which was entirely comparable to that of deoxycorticosterone, in a similar way to that already demonstrated by Borst et al. 7 in normal individuals.
