PERCHLORIC acid is often determined as potassium chloride by repeated ignition of potassium perchlorate, mixed with excess ammonium chloride and in presence of platinum as catalyst. It is currently assumed that the reducing agent is the ammonia, though K. A. Hofmann and W. Linnmann1 have shown that gaseous ammonia does not reduce perchlorate below 430° C.
