The rectifying action of a silicon crystal valve is a property of the contact between the silicon and a metal ‘cat's-whisker’. In order to complete the circuit it is necessary to have a second silicon – metal contact the resistance of which must be small compared with that of the rectifying contact, so that the rectifying action is not cancelled out by the second contact.
