THE sudden widespread interest in the Antarctic, aroused by the announcement that no less than twelve nations are organising expeditions to that region, has resulted in a spate of articles which has been chiefly remarkable for inaccurate rumours and speculations. Supposed rich deposits of uranium and other valuable minerals have been depicted as the prize for the winners of an international race to stake out territorial claims. It may therefore be useful at this stage to record the present position with regard to sovereignty and territorial claims, to summarize briefly what is known about Antarctic economic resources, and to add some notes about the various expeditions which are now either planned or in operation.
