SOME time ago I described a method (Phil. Mag., vi. 47, 23; 1924) of determining the period of transformation of RaC′, which consisted essentially in comparing the transformation constant γ with the velocity v of the recoil-atoms from RaC. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1a: the active source, which consists of RaC deposited on nickel, is placed on the cone in the lower end of the apparatus. A beam of recoil atoms is limited by the screens S; midway between the screens a number of slits is provided through which the α-particles from the recoil atoms are observed.
