Of the 325 proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation's Science and Technology Centers (STC) program, 49 were selected for site visits by teams of experts. Among the proposals in geosciences is one for a National Center for Rock Magnetism at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, under the directorship of Subir K. Banerjee. As proposed, the Center would foster research on identification and study of multiple components of natural remanent magnetization. Its unique strength would derive from a close cooperation with the magnetic recording and information industry in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Three major companies, Control Data, Honeywell, and 3M, have their corporate research headquarters in the Twin Cities and have committed themselves to cooperative research and information sharing.
