On physical examination his blood pressure was 130/ 80; pulse rate was 100 beats per minute; temperature 37.2 C (99 F), and he was alert and oriented. He had moderate weakness of grasp and dorsiflexion of the left hand. Sensation and deep tendon reflexes of the upper extremities were normal. The left calf was tender and swollen, but the dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses were equal bilaterally. There was moderate weakness of dorsiflexion of the left foot.
