Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of visual loss. The atrophic form is more frequent but accounts for only 20% of severe visual loss. The neovascular form accounts for 80% of severe visual loss. The Macular Photocoagulation Study demonstrated that prompt argon laser photocoagulation can significantly reduce the risk of severe visual loss for patients with neovascular membranes outside the fovea. For patients with both atrophic and neovascular forms of AMD, low vision aids may be of great benefit.
